Single purpose API
HopStop announced to its developer community and posted on its website that it will discontinue its free API model. HopStop's announcement shouldn't shock API junkies as HopStop joins an ever growing list of free API gone pay-to-play (i.e. Bing, Google Maps, etc.). Instead, HopStop's move should make us consider business models surrounding an API offering.

The BART API provides real-time estimated time of arrival (ETA) feeds, transit schedules, advisory feeds, and trip planning information. Our new BART API profile has details and joins a growing list of transit-related APIs including government-sponsored web services Portland's Trimet API as well as commercial services like the Hopstop API and Urban Mapping's Mass Transit Proximity API which we covered earlier this month.
