There seems to be no end to Application development Challenges. The latest challenge is from SingTel, a leading telecommunications firm based out of Singapore. The SingTel Consumer Apps Challenge is inviting mobile application developers to take part and win prizes.

The SingTel Consumer Apps Challenge requires that developers submit mobile applications in any of the following five categories:  LifeStyle, Multimedia & Entertainment, Utilities/Productivity, Social Communications and Education. These mobile applications can be targeted to any of the Smart Phone platforms like iOS, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.

To get started, you will need to register for the contest first. Registration involves providing company information. Once your registration is confirmed, you will be allowed access to the APIs and data sets. APIs include core telecom functionality like sending SMS or MMS messages. The data sets, it seems, are geared towards local Singapore data. Various data sets are present like theaters, parking lots and traffic, which developers can incorporate to provide consumer mobile applications.

The contest is in 2 phases. The submission phase is currently open till October 15. You need to submit your concept (maximum of 2 ideas per developer) to them. SingTel will select 3 applications in each of the 5 categories (a total of 15) in the first phase. These 15 applications will win S$1,000 each and the developers of the application will be asked to work on the application further, subsequent to the commercial model being agreed with SingTel. Applications will need to be completed by January 5, 2011 and the winners will be announced by the end of January. The winners in each category stand to win S$35,000 each, along with a revenue sharing model in their Marketplace. SingTel will also support the winning applications with marketing and distribution support.

The SingTel Challenge is a good opportunity for mobile developers to develop and target a new market. It should be interesting to see which applications come out on top and how they performed in the Marketplace a year from now. Do check out our Contests section for other Application Development Challenges.
