Startup Plivo Raises $1.75M

Plivo, a telephony startup that helps businesses host their voice and messaging apps in the cloud, raised seed funding totaling $1.75 million from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated, and SV Angel. As Sarah Perez reports in Techcrunch, Plivo has been growing at 30% a month since going live in July and,

Unlike Twilio, which is hosted on Amazon’s AWS, Plivo runs on its own servers in order to have more control over quality of service. However, in the past, Plivo said that its real competition came from Asterisk, which is what many larger scale business use to create their voice and SMS API platforms today. Plivo, on the other hand, is built using FreeSWITCH, a newer, open source alternative to Asterisk. FreeSWITCH doesn’t offer much documentation and requires a deeper understanding of telephony, which is why businesses often still use Asterisk, the company explained to us earlier this summer. With Plivio, FreeSWITCH, which the founders believe is the better technology, is now available as an API platform.

Customers include Imprezzio, Calliflower and Meutaro.

Mobile App Developers to Santa: Put Data in My Stocking!

Apps are becoming one crowded marketplace, and the hunt is on to entice those receiving mobile devices as gifts to buy apps this holiday season. But as Steve Patterson reports in Networkworld, developers aren't after just any user data,

The mobile app developer’s challenge isn’t acquiring sheer volume of downloads, but downloads from users who will become loyal users. User loyalty means repeat engagement with the app and it is measured in terms of cost per loyal user (CPLU), compared to the expected lifetime revenue forecasted from the user, which should drive profit. A data-driven approach that tracks usage gives the app developer insight into the best marketing alternatives and helps determine where to invest development resources to enhance the product and capture new users. The compressed holiday season makes it more challenging.

One company sharing data with app developers is Localytics. The director of marketing there, Daniel Ruby, says that those apps most recently updated are likely to engage customers more. Other factors that affect engagement are how early the app proposes a financial transaction, and how many sessions a user has before engagement kicks in. As these and other examples show, business intelligence is an increasingly important ingredient in becoming a financially successful app creator.
