Between September and November of 2012, coders and API enthusiasts submitted their best API concoctions in the 4th API Mashup Contest. Developers around the world were invited to participate in the growing competition that invites innovative ideas and offers invaluable feedback and opportunities. A Google Apps management tool took first place, with gifting, photo, music and video apps rounding out the top five.

FlashPanel, maker of security and management tools that integrate with Google Apps, took first prize. FlashPanel finds great value in the Google Apps suite, but finds that its inherent management capabilities fall short. Accordingly, FlashPanel fills the gaps. Twilio's Rob Spectre, one of the judges, paid high praise to FlashPanel's offering: "...absolutely the missing toolset for Google Apps administrators. Easy sell, high value."

Rounding out the top five included everything from gift recommendation services to social TV:

2nd Place: Giftivo - gift recommendation website that imports your friend's Facebook profile data to provide customized gift ideas.

3rd Place: Worldcam - search for Instagram images by location

4th Place: RichSeam - music discovery website that finds new music through collaborations and connections of users' favorite artists

5th Place: TVOD.ME -  social TV platform that aggregates videos from social feeds into users' channels

The API Mashup Contest benefits from strong partnerships and sponsors that promote participation, develop mentorships, and encourage activity in one of the fastest growing areas in technology. Judges for this Fall's contest spanned from angel investors and API evangelists to API news providers and educators (disclosure: including ProgrammableWeb editor Adam DuVander).
