PW Forum / Creating an api of my application

I was wondering if anyone knows of a resource that explains how to  launch an api of your own application. There's so much about how to integrate google maps into a site for example but very little on google's process for making the api available to the public. (Google just an ex. Would like to learn about the process in general.)
