With APIs becoming more and more prominent, a growing number of companies are finding success with API-only or API-centric offerings. So is building customer-facing applications a thing of the past? While there is good reason to believe that the trend toward API-focused companies will continue and even accelerate, there are still virtues to building end-to-end solutions.
As Facebook is one of the major players and MessageMe is a new kid on the block, you would expect that the latter would be intimidated, if not crushed, by any direct attack from the social giant. In this case, it doesn't seem to be so. Despite Facebook recently cutting off MessageMe's access to the Facebook Friend Graph, the newcomer has since grown in popularity and managed to raise $1.9 million.
Location-based social game FourSquare no longer has limits to where it can be used. When users click on their city name below the header of the website, they see a search box to enter a new city. Previously the service supported about 100 cities worldwide and anyone who lived elsewhere was out of luck.
