In the densely populated world of social media, it can become difficult for businesses to identify who best to engage with in order to achieve what they need to on the web; it’s hard to tell the real experts and the influential from those who simply aren’t. Little Bird is a platform that exists to tackle this issue. The service provides tools that allow users to quickly identify and engage with the right experts in their relevant fields, and in so doing, take the necessary steps towards building that respected expert status themselves. Little Bird also provides the Little Bird API that allows developers to use this service and integrate it with other applications.
During undergrad, I worked on a few side projects, with most of them using some sort of social-networking API. It was great learning some new skills and at the same time it was rewarding to tap into the vast networks of established sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Cue to postgrad and I had to complete a research component as part of my course requirements. With a nudge from my supervisor I asked the question: "Is it viable to have a generic social networking API? Will it be useful?"
Topsy, a search tool based on real-time social media activity, has unveiled a new service called Topsy Social Analytics that tracks the rise and fall in popularity of specific pieces of online content as well as broader trends in online discussion. The analytics tool, like the Topsy API, uses publicly available data from Twitter to rank content and identify trends.
