Urbanesia, the leading Indonesian lifestyle directory website, announced the launch of an open API. The open API enables third-party developers to incorporate Urbanesia's location data into third-party apps. The API allows developers to retrieve location data generally or in categories (e.g. restaurants, tourist spots, etc.). Selina Limman, Urbanesia CEO, commented: "We hope Urbanesia’s API can increase the developers’ creativity as they can [now] focus more on application development rather than data collection."
In October Google announced the cost for Google Maps if you use above 25,000 map loads per day. Many developers balked at paying for a service that had been free for several years, though it affected fewer than 1% of developers using the Google Maps API. Now the search giant is lowering the cost from $4-8 CPM to a fixed price of $0.50 per 1,000 map views. It will also start enforcing the price, though the company says this process is not automated.
Last week, online mapping platform Mapbox announced the launch of Smart Directions, a premium addition to its core offering which allows organizations and developers to incorporate maps into their applications. With Smart Directions, companies and developers are given the ability to create custom routing profiles which enable them to describe how users should be taken from their starting points to their destinations.
