Mashups using the same API (2597)
MapQuest launched another site on top of OpenStreetMap, this time for the United States. With it, came an opportunity to have your directions written in "Santa Speak," something that is also available in MapQuest's Open Directions API, along with several other languages. The new site is MapQuest's largest built with data from the "free wiki world map" and consumes at least one API itself, for showing bugs in OpenStreetMap's database.
Popular "hyperlocal" news and information service Outside.in recently released an API (our Outside.in API Profile) that provides developers with a way to access up-to-the-minute, location-based news. Based on its “news around you” feature, Radar, the API provides access to various types of information, including the latest news stories, blog posts, Twitter tweets and more located within 1,000 feet of a specific location.
We've seen over 6,500 APIs added to our directory, but we acknowledge they're not all great. In fact, there's a known secret if you've spent much time with APIs: creating a great API is really, really hard. There are a few attributes we've noticed that can make a big difference. Yesterday ProgrammableWeb's John Musser gave a standing room only talk at OSCon about the topic of a great API and boiled it down to five keys.
