Here is some interesting news that may impact developers using the Google Maps API (our Google Maps API profile). Google has recently made a couple of updates to their terms of service and have posted the the new terms of service here. There was an initial update made in early November, but one that lead to some debate and confusion about a couple of points, which in turn to a subsequent update. The net result is that the terms of service have been streamlined and some previous restrictions have been removed, including a restriction on the use of Google Maps in desktop applications. Here's a summary of the changes:
The Earthquake Data Portal API provides event information in both SOAP and REST-style services. For SOAP, the information is provided in QuakeML format. For REST, information is in either QuakeML or JSON formats. Users can do Event Searches, review Latest Events and look at Event Details. Data on seismic waveforms and their velocity are also provided, including the ability to predict arrival times and locations after they have been detected. The API will identify the data providers within the Seismolink network.
Normally we'd give a brand new site a break for not immediately having an API. When it comes to the rabidly popular FourSquare, which launched in March, developers have been clamoring to build on top of the service. So, today's launch of the FourSquare API (our FourSquare API profile) is bound to be met with extreme enthusiasm.
