At Google I/O, the developer conference in San Francisco taking place this week, the search giant announced a Siri-like service, Google Now. Users can ask questions and get answers directly in what they call "smart cards." Those cards, with flight delays and sports scores, update automatically. And you'd better believe that within each of these cards is an API call.
A mobile app using the Google Analytics API ran into a really good problem to have. It got popular. The Analytiks app had enough users that it was frequently going beyond the 50K requests per day allotted to each developer. Each users has to authenticate, but then all share a single pool of requests. By contrast, the Twitter API's per-user limit makes more sense.
Every day Foursquare users create millions of check-ins using the location-sharing platform.
