Mashups using the same API (2564)
After nearly a year with two mapping platforms running in parallel, Google announced today that Google Maps V3 had graduated from Google Code Labs to become the primary maps API. Previously the newer version was recommended for mobile applications, the original reason behind the platform rewrite. With V3's graduation, V2 becomes deprecated, but will continue to work for now.
You'd hardly notice the difference unless you were looking for it. MapQuest's latest API is a reinvention of its MapQuest API to display maps. So, what's new? Following the company's recent pattern, MapQuest Open API is based on OpenStreetMaps, the crowd-sourced map favored by many modern geo-hackers.
Google says it will close down the old version of Webmaster Tools API on April 20, the same day ClientLogin shuts down, requiring developers to switch to the new API by that date.
