Five years ago Paul Rademacher reverse engineered Google Maps to put Craigslist homes and rentals on a map on his site. The site essentially pre-launched the map mashup category, because there was no Google Maps API at the time. Now it is the prototypical example and still used by many to find their new homes. And, of course, Google Maps is now by far the most popular API to use.

A Romanian developer has developed an API to help detect faces in images and return the box coordinates so that you can build any kind of app you want.
If Yahoo shut down its mapping APIs, would anyone notice? Apparently not, as there's been little written about the company's recent announcement that makes official what we've all seen for some time: Yahoo will not be a player in Maps, instead relying on its partner, Nokia. As of September 13, the Yahoo Maps API will go away. The company is already suggesting developers migrate to Nokia's Ovi Maps API.
