Occasionally we'll get a batch of submissions that all use an API to answer the same question. In the last couple of weeks we've seen a handful of mashups using the BuzzData API to help determine the cities with the best quality of living. These mashups were submissions for the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) 2012 Best City Contest organized by BuzzData. The goal was to create the best visualization and determine where is the best city to live.
With the recent explosion of cloud computing services, developers now have more opportunities than ever to take advantage of enterprise-scale computing platforms. However, most cloud computing services, such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), have unique and incompatible APIs. This has provided a challenge for organizations wanting to develop in-house applications that can later be seamlessly deployed directly to Amazon's service when necessary. For example, Ubuntu Server, a Linux-based operating system supported by Europe's Canonical Ltd, is the most widely deployed operating system on EC2, yet there has been no way for developers to create private, EC2-compatible cloud computing systems internally with Ubuntu.
56 APIs Used in 7 Days: Amazon, Bing, Digg, Facebook, Flickr, Google, LinkedIn, NPR, Sunlight, Twitter, Yahoo, Yelp, and YouTube
This past week 17 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 56 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Blogmarks, Friendster, Gigablast, Posterous, Twinfluence, Twitter Grader, TypePad , ZoomIn and ZoomInfo. The most often used APIs this week are Box.net, Twitter and YouTube. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (9 APIs, 15 mashups), Search (7 APIs, 11 mashups) and Video (7 APIs, 12 mashups). The following list shows which APIs were used by which mashups.
