Mashups using the same API (3062)
Over one-third of our mashup directory is made up of mapping mashups and their popularity shows no signs of slowing down. We have taken two looks at mapping mashups in the past. With it being a year since our last review, now is a good time to look at the newest mashups taking advantage of mapping APIs. Read below for more information on each.
Photo editing service Aviary has added a new HTTP-based API that allows developers to pass photos through filters, effects and even basic editing operations. Aviary "soft-launched" the new Aviary Effects API last week at SXSW, when we interviewed Aviary's Michael Galpert (video below). The new service could be used to create photo-sharing services like Instagram, CMS plugins to aid workflow or within social applications to create a standard look to all avatars.
It's been a short time since Microsoft announced the release of Bing, their next generation search platform (with its own Bing API). Along with the name change, several of Microsoft's product offerings have also rebranded, including two core mapping products: Live Search Maps and Virtual Earth. This means that Virtual Earth API will be no more -- it is now officially called the Bing Maps API (we've added a new Bing Maps API profile).
