Mashups using the same API (1)
Locu, one of CNN's hot startups to watch, has released an API that exposes Locu's database of business information to third party developers. Locu launched the Locu API at Tech Disrupt SF 2012 and drew immediate attention. The API allows developers to retrieve real-time business data (e.g. venue information, pricelists, menus, etc.) and integrate the data into existing applications. Locu's index crawls the web for business data, and the API makes that data available to other websites and applications.
A workshop on open government data pathways by API Evangelist and current White House Innovation Fellow, Kin Lane, shows there is still plenty of potential for developers, startups and interested citizens to influence the government open data agenda and make use of government data assets. Lane ran the workshop as part of the pre-opening day's workshop series at API Strategy and Practice, being held in San Francisco for the rest of the week.
In Spring 2011, the New York Public Library (NYPL) launched one of the largest culinary data projects of all time: What's on the Menu?. The NYPL maintains one of the world's largest menu collections (around 45,000 menus dating back to the 1840s). The project aims to ease searching through this massive dataset. In simplifying menu search, What's on the Menu launched the first NYPL public API.
