MyDoorHandle allows users to create short, memorable weblinks that point to physical locations: DoorHandles. Instead of sharing physical addresses (which easily become outdated or incomplete), DoorHandles create a digital address which are easy to create and continually ensure accuracy. MyDoorHandle has now expanded its offering to include API access to DoorHandle creation. The API will allow third party developers to incorporate MyDoorHandle's many location based services.
The geo mapping platform ecosystem has grown a little more as the competition between Google Maps and Bing Maps just got a lot more interesting. It's been less than a week since we covered the release of a variety of new features for Bing Maps, including the addition of new StreetSide panoramic imagery similar to that used in Google Maps StreetView. At the time, it seems that Bing Maps was making a move to "catch up" with Google Maps in terms of immersive street-level panoramic photos. And now Google has countered back with the release of "aerial perspective imagery" similar to the Bird's Eye View imagery used in Google Maps.
These days it might be hard to remember that the Yahoo Maps API was ever second fiddle to the Google Maps API. These days, it barely picks up its fiddle. And in less than two weeks, Yahoo will lift its once-mighty mapping API above its head and bang the fiddle repeatedly into the stage like Pete Townshend. The remnants, barely held together with strings and the crumpled instrument neck, will then go in some dumpster in Sunnyvale. It's okay, after all, because Nokia's Ovi Maps API will be a fine replacement. It's only the nostalgic, like me, who'll have any problem with seeing the Yahoo name disappear.
