Developers at National Day of Civic Hacking Use US Census Bureau API to Create Innovative App and Infographics
Over 11,000 people participated in the first annual National Day of Civic Hacking on June 1st and 2nd, 2013. At the event, developers collaborated with government agencies and entrepreneurs to create applications that help solve civic and social problems impacting local communities. Developers used a variety of public APIs and datasets to create their applications, including the US Census Bureau API, which was used to create an interactive application and several infographics. The US Census Bureau API is the first API created by the US Census Bureau and was released to the public back in July 2012.
APIs are at the heart of a new initiative aimed at giving the U.S. government the agility and flexibility needed to serve today’s citizens, communities and businesses. The White House’s General Services Administration (GSA) has established “18F,” a new department aimed at providing open source tools and demonstrating new ways of working with entrepreneurs and innovators to deliver digital services to government agencies, businesses and citizens.
The Federal Register is touted as "The Daily Journal Of The United States Government". Its website, federalregister.gov, allows access to the documents published there, which include proposed rules, final rules, public notices, and Presidential actions. It's a pretty interesting and useful look into what the US Government is doing, and how it might affect your life. Amazingly enough, it has a full-featured API, which is a truly open source project, to allow access to the Federal Register within applications.
