What if you published ground-breaking research. Would anybody notice? How would you know they noticed? Such questions aren't just for the narcissistic mad scientists among us. What if you funded the research? You'd want to know the impact. Altmetric tracks "article level mentions". These metrics are defined by the Public Library of Science (PLOS) as measuring usage, citations, social bookmarking and activity, media coverage (including blogs), ratings and discussion activity. The Altmetric API provides access to its metrics that are derived from its database of over 300,000 articles and over 8,000 journals.
When it comes to traditional enterprise applications the nature of the APIs being used doesn’t change all that often. For that reason developers of enterprise applications tend to prefer work at a higher level of abstraction that relies on connectors rather than lower level APIs to reduce the complexity associated with building composite applications in the enterprise.
In recent months, the number of government open data APIs has been increasing rapidly due to a variety of factors including the development of open data technology platforms, the launch of Project Open Data and a recent White House executive order regarding government data. This post is a general overview of several recent factors that have led to the rise of government open data APIs.
