Peter Coffee, Director of Platform Research at Salesforce.com, has published a compelling post about "The Incredible Importance of Open APIs" over at the Force.com blog. In case you may have forgotten, Salesforce.com's web APIs are an integral part of the company's offerings, with a variety of internal and third party products that rely on these APIs for literally millions of transactions a day (in fact, by January, 2008 Salesforce.com had already served 24 billion API calls).
Wearables are the next big thing and Plantronics, maker of enterprise-grade Bluetooth headsets and other gear, wants to play a key role. The company has a dedicated developer program with PLT Labs, and is participating in hackathons around the country to raise awareness about its potential.
SaaS vendors need to get a clue about open APIs. That's the takeaway from a panel discussion at last month's Interop event in Las Vegas. According to Network World's coverage of the session on Herding Cats: Managing SaaS Sprawl, with panelists from Boomi, Appirio, OpSource, and NetSuite, too many SaaS vendors do not consider including an open API as a core part of their service:
