I won't get into the nitty-gritty, but the backend engine is actually doing a lot of geoprocessing for each request (those images are all generated based on the latest data when requested -- no canned raster imagery), but we're constantly working to improve it, and subsequent releases should see substantial speed improvements and optimization. However, a quick tip: If you're looking at it in IE v5.5 to anything less than 7, our overlays are transparent PNGs which requires loading a special hack through IE. We've noticed in our internal testing that this tends to make the images load a little slower in IE. Enjoy! |
