At the The Next Web Hackathon in Amsterdam, developers played with a lot of new APIs. One that caught our attention is the Gbanga Puppetmaster API. Gbanga is a location-aware gaming platform, intended for use with games where walking around within the real world matter. It's released one game, Gbanga Famiglia, a mobile phone-based app using a theme of mafia families taking over areas and finding loot. Much more exciting, however, is its API, which allows for quests within Famiglia, and other, separate location-based games.
Chris Sheldrick, CEO of the London-based company what3words, has taken a novel approach to the task of navigation with a new API. Sheldrick’s idea stems from the logistical difficulties he encountered while working internationally in the music business. During that period in his career, Sheldrick was faced with coordinating the rendezvous of dozens of people in remote locations. Despite his best efforts at communication, people would still find themselves calling one another on the day of a meeting, seeking clarification on the location of the meeting place.
Quandl Founder Tammer Kamel wants to create a new Wikipedia for Numeric Data. Quandl has built a sort of "universal data parser" which has thus far parsed about 2.8 million datasets without anything from any data publisher. As long as they spit out data somehow (excel, text file, blog post, xml, api, etc) the "Q-bot" can slurp it up. The result is quandl.com as sort of "search engine" for numerical data. Quandl's bot returns data in a totally standard format. The idea with Quandl is that you can find data fast, and it is ready to use.
