Each week we see dozens of mashups added to our mashup directory and often these use and combine APIs that go beyond the typical Google Maps mashup of old. This past week three of the more innovative ones go beyond just maps by using APIs from Netflix, MyBlogLog and Flickr. Here's a quick overview:
When we search for information on a map we tend to be searching to find where something is now. But, what if you wanted to find out where something used to be? What businesses used to be located at a particular address? Where did somebody used to live? Where did all the blacksmiths used to hang out? If you are interested in find out that information there's now a solution: AddressingHistory. AddressingHistory is a recently launched web app and API that provides access to historical data consisting of digitised Scottish post office directories combined with maps from the same time period.
Here is some interesting news that may impact developers using the Google Maps API (our Google Maps API profile). Google has recently made a couple of updates to their terms of service and have posted the the new terms of service here. There was an initial update made in early November, but one that lead to some debate and confusion about a couple of points, which in turn to a subsequent update. The net result is that the terms of service have been streamlined and some previous restrictions have been removed, including a restriction on the use of Google Maps in desktop applications. Here's a summary of the changes:
