Here are 9 new APIs just added to our API directory. A couple that we covered earlier this week came from the big name API providers via Google's new Maps Data API and Yahoo launching the Placemaker API. Also in the headlines is our new entry for the Wolfram Alpha API. Other interesting new directory entries include the TweetShrink API for helping shrink those just-too-long twitter tweets, the UK Civil Service API for finding UK civil service jobs, and the Tinysong API for find where a song is available for streaming online. More on all 9 interesting new APIs below:

Google Maps DataGoogle Maps Data API: The Google Maps Data API allows client applications to view, store and update map data in the form of Google Data API feeds using a data model of features (placemarks, lines and shapes) and maps (collections of features). Since it uses this familiar model, this new API makes it easy to build geo applications for specific activities like planning and sharing trips, collaboratively mapping hiking trails, or saving a list of favorite restaurants

Wolfram Alpha Wolfram Alpha API: Wolfram|Alpha is a "computational knowledge engine" whose long-term goal is "to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone. We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method, and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything." It contains 10+ trillion of pieces of data, 50,000+ types of algorithms and models, and linguistic capabilities for 1000+ domains.

The API provides two general classes of queries. At the highest level, you can submit free-form queries like users might enter at the Wolfram|Alpha site itself, and get back full Wolfram|Alpha output in a variety of formats. The second type of query is a lower-level request for a single well-defined result, or range of results, from their entity/property-based data API, such as a caloric value for a food item, or a tide table for a requested location

Yahoo PlacemakerYahoo Placemaker API: Yahoo Placemaker is a new "geo-enrichment" platform. The freely-available API enables developers and publishers to make applications and data sets location-aware by determining the "whereness" of unstructured content (such as blog posts, new articles, feeds, and web pages). To use it, developers specify structured and unstructued content; feeds, web pages, news, status articles, etc. Then Placemaker identifies, disambiguates and extracts places. And finally Placemaker returns geographic metadata, which determines the whereness of structured and unstructured content.

ShrtenShrten API: Create short URLs on the fly with the Shrten API. With no advertising or requirements, this service lets you create short URLs for use in any type of application.

SpinVoxSpinVox API: SpinVox captures spoken messages and cleverly converts them into text. This speech to text service then delivers your message to your choice of an inbox, blog, wall, or space.

StreamAPIStreamAPI API: StreamAPI enables users to incorporate live streaming video into their website or application. StreamAPI keeps track of viewership through reporting and analytics services. High definition video (HD) is supported using Flash technology, including support for full HD using VP6 and H.264 with 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. The Stream API allows developers to embed videos into their websites.

TinysongTinysong API: Tinysong is a music sharing service that allows users to type in the name of a song and receive listings of where the song can be found streaming on the internet. The URLs leading to the songs are stored in a shortened format, preceded by tinysong.com. The Tinysong API allows developers to access the search and metadata features of the service.

TweetShrinkTweetShrink API: Tweetshrink is a service aimed at Twitter users, helping shave those few extra letters off a tweet that has exceeded the 140 character maximum. The service helps users clip that max allowance without having to actively edit their tweet or changing the meaning or basic readability of the original message. Other applications can send tweets/text messages to the Tweetshrink API and have it shrinked for them.

UK Civil ServiceUK Civil Service API: The UK's Civil Service helps job-seekers find work or retrain for new careers in industry, government, agriculture, and education. The Civil Service API enables developers retrieve and list all jobs currently available across the whole of the UK Civil Service.
