The last few years have seen the emergence of friend and business networks and users have raced to setup business connections and lookup old friends. How about taking a break and concentrate on building up a dream application for your family? MyHeritage.com, which provides sites to build your family tree and a family graph genealogy API, has extended its developer contest, that invites developers to build interesting applications within family networks.
MyHeritage allows anyone to setup a family tree with photos and share it with other people. In fact, one can connect with other families on MyHeritage.com and build up interesting connections. The site is free to use and provides an API that allows accessing various objects like sites, family tree, individuals, photos and much more. Think about the Family Graph API as being similar to what the Facebook Graph API is for social connections. To get started, you will need an API key. The API is REST-based and supports JSON only. It also provides a PHP client library.
To encourage the use of its API, MyHeritage.com announced a developer contest to build family-oriented applications that make use of the Family Graph API. Originally set to expire before the end of the year, the contest now runs until February 15, 2012. The judges will shortlist the top three or more applications and a public voting phase will commence from March 1 to March 15. The winner will be declared on March 15 and will be awarded a grand prize of $10,000.
If you are looking for some inspiration on the kind of applications that you can build, MyHeritage has provided a list of sample applications. You will also find suggestions for various applications like an e-commerce site where you can view the family tree and on birthdays or anniversaries, allow family members to send each other a gift.
