Giphy Launches Sticker API to Accommodate Transparent GIFs

Giphy, animated search engine for discovering and sharing GIF images, has expanded its API offering to included a Sticker API. The Sticker API extends the existing library of GIFs with images that use transparent backgrounds. After integration with the API, developers can insert the stickers into websites and apps. This update allows developers to better integrate GIFs into an existing design, without the need for background matching.

Giphy searches for stickers both through web crawlers and an in-house team of sticker editors. Once stickers are added to its database, Giphy exposes the stickers using a method similar to its other offerings. Giphy indexes and organizes the stickers in a method that makes the stickers easily searchable.

The API automatically updates; therefore, any app or site integrated with the API gains access to the latest sticker additions. The API is free to use, but it is not currently intended for commercial use. Down the road, Giphy envisions itself as an "indie" distribution portal for artists who desire to sell animated stickers in apps. Those interested in API access should contact the API team

To promote the Sticker API, Giphy has opened a Sticker Shop design contest. Designers are encouraged to submit as many animated or static stickers as they want with the opportunity to win prizes and change the way the world communicates. Interested designers should check out what the judges are looking for and submit entries by October 27th.
