Using the non-proprietary Jabber/XMPP as the protocol is a nice disruptive Google-style entry into the space. Couple of points: clean interface, currently no advertising or popups, requires GMail account. Useful posts on the topic: The official Google Talk site. There's already a Wikipedia entry on it. For now, it just appears as another proprietary implementation of an open protocol. Hope they open this up to connecting w/other Jabber servers.
