According to Mike Amundsen, we are at a crossroads due to the exploding number of connected devices coming online. During his talk at APIStrat Amsterdam, he stated that given the tools, techniques and concepts in use today, it will become increasingly difficult to manage these devices. A rule based approach will allow for less expensive programming that has a lower chance of malfunctioning. He argues that if this pattern is used, where small items act as sensors arranged in ways that can solve problems, then the barrier of entry for people to come up with creative solutions is lowered. People will no longer be required to learn how to code, they can think more about how these patters are put together. By opening programming up to more people, experimentation becomes both faster and easier.
