A team at Indiana University created Scholarometer to "facilitate citation analysis and help evaluate the impact of an author's publications." The crowdsourced data created through the Scholarometer platform is available through the Scholarometer API that allows developers to track certain authors through name, citation, disciplines, relevance, and other metrics.
In their abstract introducing Scholarometer, the Indiana University team recognized:
"The use of quantitative metrics to gauge the impact of scholarly publications, authors, and disciplines is predicated on the availability of reliable usage and annotation data....However, current annotation systems rely on proprietary labels, refer to journals but not articles or authors, and are manually curated. To address these limitations, we propose a social framework based on crowdsourced annotations of scholars, designed to keep up with the rapidly evolving disciplinary and interdisciplinary landscape."
The Scholarometer API uses REST protocol and returns data in XML or RDF/XML format. A series of GET methods are available to access the API data (e.g. list of authors, author names, ID, similar authors, disciplines, etc.). Social media and new content methods have changed our entire base of traditional content providers. From traditional news sources, to scholarly articles and journals, content providers must address new outlets for their content. The Scholarometer project recognizes the impact of new content outlets and has opened up the possibility that non-traditional methods offer quality, impactful sources.
