Smartphones will continue to play a bigger role in our lives. The results of a recent study by research firm Mind Commerce confirms this. According to the report, the telecom networks API industry will grow 38% and account for $157 billion in global revenue by 2018.
The 110-page report, “Telecom Network API Marketplace: Strategy, Ecosystem, Players and Forecasts 2013-2018,” examines the telecom network API market. It looks at business models, value chains, operator and vendor strategies, and more.
Today 24% of all web applications and 15% of all mobile applications rely on APIs. But over the next five years, driven by an influx of cash from vendors, developers and carriers, this figure will climb to over 68%, Mind Commerce said.
“While a large part of the market is yet to understand their technological and strategic significance, telco network APIs play a critical part in carrier networks as a secondary stream of revenue,” the company wrote on its website.
Asia Pacific, North America and Western Europe will remain the dominant market segments through 2018. Most of the growth will occur in Latin and Central America and the Middle East and Africa.
The average volume of API calls for a typical tier 1 wireless carrier, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon, will skyrocket over the next five years, reaching 160 billion transactions a month on average.
