Take Heart: Novartis Puts $40K Up For Mobile Health Hackathon This Weekend

A new hackathon competition with major money prizes totaling $40,000 and the chance to play with some cool new health devices is being held in San Francisco this weekend. ProgrammableWeb readers and local developers with an interest in health data are encouraged to participate in the Novartis Mobile Health Challenge, being held in the SPUR Building, 654 Mission Street, San Francisco from Friday, 25 October to Sunday, 27 October.

The hackathon - organized by Fortune 500 pharmaceuticals company Novartis - is looking for workable solutions that will allow caregivers for loved ones with heart failure to be able to provide better support. Heart failure is a deteriorating condition that results in someone being hospitalized every 30 seconds in the US. Caregivers play a crucial role in supporting patients with heart failure to manage their diet, level of exercise, or adhere to a strict medicine regime.

For the hackathon, Novartis will provide an anonymized health dataset via API to encourage competitors to create mobile health solutions to better manage this major condition. Other API providers include API management platform Mashery, Apptentive and wearable health tech API enabler Validic.

Novartis are providing $40,000 in cash prizes to winning competition teams, while other partners are providing prizes including Jawbone devices, and free access to subscription-based services.

Speaking to ProgrammableWeb, Cheryl Cheng from BlueRun Ventures, one of the organizing partners for the event, said:

"In addition, we have iHealth Labs bringing some smart devices that capture biometrics data. They will be there with their API and devices."
