Amazon App Store now supports charging for HTML5 web apps, new promotion opportunities. One Roof Energy heats up API library for managing solar installations. Plus: Startupbus announces API contest, how to enable and monetize the app economy, and 10 new APIs.

Amazon's "Free App of the Day" Promotes HTML5 Web Apps You Can Charge For

All HTML5 apps used to be free on the Amazon app store. No more. These apps, that run on all Android devices, from Kindle Fire to Samsung Galaxy, can go wherever the Amazon app store goes. And they can be promoted via FAD, the free app of the day, when chosen by Amazon.

As Sarah Perez reports in Techcrunch, it's likely all about competing with that other app store run by a fruit company:

"The move was one which Amazon had likely hoped would help its Appstore grow, by capitalizing on the fact that, while many developers today still go iOS-first, they often still have at their ready a responsive website which runs well on Android."

But problems remain: how do you distinguish between native Android apps and those running on the web? Sometimes it isn't obvious, because they are all listed together. And just how many HTML5-flavored apps are there on Amazon's store today? Perez notes that Amazon declined her request for numbers. Meanwhile, Apple just keeps promoting their app store numbers, noting in a recent conference call that 130,000 of them come from Chinese developers, with over 65 billion downloads since Apple's app store opened its doors.

Solar Company One Roof Energy Installs API Library to Help Partners Manage Systems

One Roof Energy sells solutions to its partnering home energy management and automation companies, specializing in solar leases to end user consumers and businesses. It's APIs provide data on a range of aspects to do with their systems. Just one of them allows developer access to solar lease pricing, proposal financing, lease fulfillment and solar performance monitoring data.

The company outlined the process:

"SunOpps [is] OneRoof Energy’s web-based platform that allows dealers, affiliates and sales people to design, sell and manage a solar electric system. At the heart of SunOpps is SunOpps Intelligence, which constitutes a series of calculation engines and estimation tools that provide accurate savings and pricing information, taking into account factors such as shading, products and sun zones. The SunOpps API allows third party systems to communicate with OneRoof Energy’s tools without needing to access the company’s web portal."

The API library is the interface with SunOpps. This makes available a series of calculation engines and estimation tools for savings and pricing information, taking into account factors such as shading, products and sun zones. These are in addition to the company's CRM-related APIs.
