The API Mashup Contest, which invites developers to submit their public API mashups has announced the results. The 3rd edition of the contest took submissions throughout April and May this year and a total of 46 mashups were submitted. The best projects receive further help, including mentoring and links to angel investors. Travel mashups dominated the winners with Tripomatic, an online trip planner winning the top honors.

The organizers published some interesting statistics based on the APIs that the projects used. Of the 47 Projects, more than half used a Google API. Specific API in terms of their popularity were Google Maps, Facebook Graph API, Twitter and YouTube respectively.

The top 3 positions were bagged by:

  • Tripomatic - an online trip planner for independent travelers. The website recommends must-see places in more than 300 destinations all around the world. You can choose what you are interested in and add it to your travel itinerary. The founders’ goal is to enable travelers to plan their holiday in under 15 minutes.
  • Zalike – A system and tools that allows companies to motivate clients to share information about their products and services in social networks and to publicly evaluate goods and services.
  • Skypicker - European low-cost airline-ticket search engine where you can find the abolutely lowest fares.

Pavel Curda, founder of the API Mashup Contest said "The competition was tough again. The next step is to help the registered projects get what they need – mentoring, business advice, help with getting additional team members, finance. All this in order to maximise the projects' chances to turn into successful and viable start-ups“. It would be interesting to see where these projects are in the next year or two.
