In an event at Twitter headquarters, CEO Evan Williams unveiled a new The site, which Williams referred to as the most popular Twitter client, now includes inline images, videos and other information behind the tweet, such as an entire conversation. The flagship site of the popular micro-blogging platform now runs on its own API, as well as those of several other services. previously ran on servers separate from the API, with calls to tweet data presumably duplicating those called via the API. Now that the site itself uses the API, Twitter claims users will see a more robust infrastructure. This isn't the first time Twitter has "eaten its own dogfood," the term for tech companies using their own software. The Twitter iPhone and iPad apps both run on top of Twitter's API, as does the mobile site Twitter launched in December.

The site also incorporates a number of third-party APIs for displaying media shared in tweets. Twitter partnered with 16 providers at launch, including YouTube and Twitpic. The full list of partners, via Twitter's announcement post: DailyBooth, DeviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube.

At the event, Twitter played a video (embedded below) showing off its new features, including embedded media, unlimited scrolling and tweet meta-data (including geotags). The new site will be rolled out as a preview over the next several weeks, allowing users to switch between the two versions before the old version goes away.
