Very little has been happening on the GM API front lately beyond plans for connected cars announced in January. But that quiet period could signal the retooling before the storm. Programmableweb's Janet Wagner wrote a three-part series earlier in June, making it clear that changes are coming from every auto manufacturer. One indication: our API directory lists 17 APIs under "vehicle." The GM APIs cover features everyone would expect, from audio streaming to location data. But GM's plans extend far beyond that.
In this post I'll describe how we planned, built and tested a truly real-time location-based game with Socket.io, Redis, Node.js, and what we learned along the way. Over the past few months, we've spent the majority our free time building a real-time game as a test for our location platform, Geoloqi. We call the game MapAttack! due to its map-based nature. Two teams compete to capture the most points on the gameboard. The gameboard, in this case, is the city streets of the neighborhood the players are in.
Flickr has added more real-time goodness to their photo API. Using a publish / subscribe (PubSub) system, developers can now receive real-time updates across millions of photos across Flickr friends, Flickr Commons, and by tags and geo-location using the Flickr Real-Time API.
