ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is scholarly non-profit organization. They aim to resolve the difficulty of name ambiguity in scholarly communications. As an international and interdisciplinary collaborative effort, they are trying to develop a scheme for linking and identifying research objects such as grants, papers, and patents. Their API is provided in two tiers, both RESTful and providing access to the information in the ORCID database. It returns results in JSON, XML, and HTML.
