The use of location in applications is a key differentiator today. While the current craze towards Location Based Services is gravitated towards deals, coupons and services, we often overlook the most fundamental of them all i.e. the news in your vicinity. Outside.in, a location based news aggregator, has welcomed 2011 with enhancements to its Outside.in API that could give rise to a new set of hyperlocal news.
A while back, we talked about using popular APIs to develop a new type of online hub for small towns and local areas. We talked about grabbing images, tweets, and all sorts of content, but we forgot a very important part: the news. Thanks to Outside.in's revamped API, we can add local news to the mix.
Popular "hyperlocal" news and information service Outside.in recently released an API (our Outside.in API Profile) that provides developers with a way to access up-to-the-minute, location-based news. Based on its “news around you” feature, Radar, the API provides access to various types of information, including the latest news stories, blog posts, Twitter tweets and more located within 1,000 feet of a specific location.
