Remote server

A remote server is a server that is non-local to the requesting party. Traditional servers are on-premise, local data centers, utilized in a self-hosted private network or intranet. Remote servers, however, are external to the organization. "Remote" typically implies that the server is not on a private network. A remote server could be cloud-based and distributed or simply refer to any external server outside of a company's firewall. For example, a company may store resources on a public cloud server provided by a Cloud Service Provider. Some remote servers are responsible for data processing and even commodified with proprietary functionality. Web APIs routinely communicate with web servers to access and modify resources.
