This is the official PHP library for interacting with the Alfresco platform API from a PHP application. The library is developed and maintained by Alfresco, and comes well-documented. Alfresco is an enterprise content platform for storing and sharing important documents such as strategic plans, customer profiles, sales presentations, invoices, and contracts. It also features social tools that let people within a company share and discover content the same way they do with social media. Alfresco provides both a Cloud (SaaS) offering as well as an on-premises edition. It readily integrates with mobile devices (via a dedicated application), MS Office, Apple iWork, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Docs, and more. Many of Alfresco's features are accessible programmatically via REST-like APIs as well as the CMIS API.
Box.Net is on a mission to increase adoption of its file storage service with consumers. After successful adoption of its service with enterprise customers, it is clearly determined to woo mobile device owners by providing them with large amounts of free space (50GB!). To make it easier, it is partnering with device manufacturers like LG to provide the free space seamlessly via the Box.net API.
The emergence of platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings as a foundation to build applications in a way that abstracts traditional middleware is proving to be a boon for developers in the age of the cloud. The challenge is that there is no such thing as a single cloud. The cloud actually consists of a mix of programmable platforms that lie both inside and out of the traditional enterprise. Apprenda wants to make it easier to invoke those cloud resources with the inclusion of an API that allows developers to dynamically scale resources in response to user traffic demands or a specific policy requirement within the PaaS environment.
