Have you ever wondered how much traffic Twitter handles in a given day, or what software sits behind the curtain of the popular service? A recent presentation reveals some of the answers. Twitter's incredible growth becomes obvious when you compare the recent numbers to those announced at Chirp.
The prevalence of mashups on the web is probably thanks to the Google Maps API and other mapping APIs. It remains the most popular type of mashup, more than three times the second-most, photos. The ubiquity means maybe map mashups have lost some of their luster.
At the The Next Web Hackathon in Amsterdam, developers played with a lot of new APIs. One that caught our attention is the Gbanga Puppetmaster API. Gbanga is a location-aware gaming platform, intended for use with games where walking around within the real world matter. It's released one game, Gbanga Famiglia, a mobile phone-based app using a theme of mafia families taking over areas and finding loot. Much more exciting, however, is its API, which allows for quests within Famiglia, and other, separate location-based games.
