Flickcurl is a library for implementing the Flickr API in C. This library supports the entire Flickr API, including functions for browsing, searching, and uploading photos and videos. It comes with a program called flickrdf that turns a photo's metadata, tags, machine tags, and places into RDF triples descriptions.
Along with the rapid growth of video APIs, the marketplace of photo-related APIs continues to expand rapidly. Since we looked at 36 Photo APIs earlier this year, we've added nearly a dozen new ones, and there are now 47 APIs tagged "photo" in our web service directory.
Khronos Group, open standards consortium behind some of today's most innovative technologies, has announced a new initiative to develop an open, royalty-free API for advanced, low-level control of mobile and embedded cameras and sensors. Khronos created the Camera working group to develop the API and is currently recruiting participants. All participants may contribute to the standard and the group will collaborate with other working groups to enhance its effectiveness.
Photo editing service Aviary has added a new HTTP-based API that allows developers to pass photos through filters, effects and even basic editing operations. Aviary "soft-launched" the new Aviary Effects API last week at SXSW, when we interviewed Aviary's Michael Galpert (video below). The new service could be used to create photo-sharing services like Instagram, CMS plugins to aid workflow or within social applications to create a standard look to all avatars.
