Mapillary has launched an open-source SDK for its street-level image platform. The SDK allows users to process and upload images to the platform. The more images uploaded, the more up to date and more robust maps become within third party apps. Currently, over 390 million images have been uploaded.
MapQuest's recent entree into mobile developer tools is an interesting one. Choosing Android over iPhone means going toe to toe with Google, a familiar competitor to MapQuest on the mapping front. Mapping is logically MapQuest's turf. The company was helping people find directions online before Larry and Sergey were even in graduate school, let alone leaving to found Google. Of course, another way of looking at it is that Android is in line with MapQuest's latest push to open up mapping data.
Location-based social game FourSquare no longer has limits to where it can be used. When users click on their city name below the header of the website, they see a search box to enter a new city. Previously the service supported about 100 cities worldwide and anyone who lived elsewhere was out of luck.
