The Google Maps API naturally has a rich history on ProgrammableWeb. Over the last year or so, Google has released additional maps-related APIs as separate services. One of the latest ones is the Google Distance Matrix API. This allows a developer to submit a matrix of locations, as origins and destinations, and get a list of the distances in return.
Last week, online mapping platform Mapbox announced the launch of Smart Directions, a premium addition to its core offering which allows organizations and developers to incorporate maps into their applications. With Smart Directions, companies and developers are given the ability to create custom routing profiles which enable them to describe how users should be taken from their starting points to their destinations.
Popular location-based social network Foursquare quietly made the long-teased new version of its API publicly available Tuesday. The changes, embraced by its developer community, include JSON-formatted responses and OAuth-only authentication. Even though the new API is characterized as in beta, the company has also deprecated the previous version, announcing it will no longer be available by the middle of next year.
