The GeoNames Python Library GeoNames Python Library by Dennis Carriere is a 0.1.2 Python Package for use with the GeoNames API. This library parses the geonames.org datasets into a clean and user-friendly OGR shapefile format. The GeoNames API is a geographical database with web services that let users extract useful information about different places, such as weather, timezone and post codes.
After nearly a year with two mapping platforms running in parallel, Google announced today that Google Maps V3 had graduated from Google Code Labs to become the primary maps API. Previously the newer version was recommended for mobile applications, the original reason behind the platform rewrite. With V3's graduation, V2 becomes deprecated, but will continue to work for now.
Factual Inc, a company founded by ex-Googler Gil Elbaz that is creating a collaborative data platform, announced extensions to its Factual APIs today that are aimed at improving the ability to target advertising and provide other geo-based capabilities in mobile applications. The three new APIs, Geopulse, Reverse Geocoder, and World Geographies, fill gaps and extend the scope of Factual’s API portfolio. But the way that Factual thinks about its APIs also holds lessons for anyone who is mapping out an API strategy of their own.
