In this first of a series of articles about encouraging API adoption, I talked with Blair Beckwith, Developer Advocate and App Store Lead from Shopify. Shopify is an e-commerce platform for selling just about anything you can think of from 50 Cent's headphone collection to fancy, leather laptop bags. There are two kinds of "developer" on Shopify: 1) those who create templates that dictate the look and feel of a site, and 2) those who create add-ons that are available in the shopkeeper add-on store. In this article, I'm going to concentrate on the second one, the add-on developers.
When Amazon recently implemented what it calls "efficiency guidelines" in its Amazon Product Advertising API, the online retail giant took some developers by surprise. The change was meant to limit access to sites that did not send buying customers. However, a change to your code is required to ensure that you receive the correct level of access. Those that didn't make the change were subjected to the lowest limits. For some, that meant lost revenue--both to the developer and Amazon.
The Indix API released today makes product information available in machine-readable format from the "world's most comprehensive product intelligence platform", Indix. ProgrammableWeb spoke with Shalendra Chhabra, Director of Marketing, on the eve of the API release.
