Whether we like it or not, social media is a powerful marketing tool, and what people are saying about a brand or business can have a noticeable effect; good or bad. What would be really beneficial, is if businesses could be notified immediately whenever their product or brand was mentioned on a social media platform or elsewhere on the web, allowing them to act accordingly. Enter Mention. It's created to do exactly that - allow users to follow mentions online. Mention also provides the Mention API that allows developers to integrate this functionality with other applications.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has just launched the brand new USDA Farmers Market Directory API providing developers programmatic access to the USDA National Farmers Market Directory database. According to the USDA website, the National Farmers Market Directory has over 7,800 farmers market listings for all 50 states and provides consumers farmers market information such as market locations, directions, operating times, product offerings, and accepted forms of payment.
When the popular location-based social network Foursquare launched, it quickly attracted users with its game-like features. Now, with over 170,00 users, the service has rapidly become a huge source of data about the popularity of businesses and locations. In November, Foursquare gave developers access to some of this data by releasing an API (check out our Foursquare coverage here).
