For snap-happy smartphone and tablet users, having somewhere to store their treasured pics is probably very appealing. Photo books have been a trendy favourite for a while now, and Printzel is an app-powered platform that allows users to create their own printed photo books directly from their mobile and tablet devices. The company also provides the Printzel API that now makes it possible for developers to offer printed books from their own applications.
Filmaster, a project started by two Polish movie addicts in 2008 has made moves that could catapult them into the big marquee. Filmaster takes it one step further than movie databases like IMDB and movie recommendation engines like Mombo by combining movies and recommendation with a complete community-based social experience. And to support all this, it has a website, mobile applications and a Filmaster API to fuel further adoption.
In this first of a series of articles about encouraging API adoption, I talked with Blair Beckwith, Developer Advocate and App Store Lead from Shopify. Shopify is an e-commerce platform for selling just about anything you can think of from 50 Cent's headphone collection to fancy, leather laptop bags. There are two kinds of "developer" on Shopify: 1) those who create templates that dictate the look and feel of a site, and 2) those who create add-ons that are available in the shopkeeper add-on store. In this article, I'm going to concentrate on the second one, the add-on developers.
