At the The Next Web Hackathon in Amsterdam, developers played with a lot of new APIs. One that caught our attention is the Gbanga Puppetmaster API. Gbanga is a location-aware gaming platform, intended for use with games where walking around within the real world matter. It's released one game, Gbanga Famiglia, a mobile phone-based app using a theme of mafia families taking over areas and finding loot. Much more exciting, however, is its API, which allows for quests within Famiglia, and other, separate location-based games.
Most mashups rely on some type of API that's freely provided by a public web site. ProgrammableWeb tracks thousands of these resources across dozens of categories. Generally, these interfaces are SOAP or REST-based, but they may also work in cooperation with other open formats like RSS or Atom. In an enterprise setting, mashups have a more diverse set of protocols to potentially leverage including JDBC/ADO.NET (databases), SMTP/IMAP (email), and SNMP (network monitoring). Unless you are building a data mashup, one of the participants API's is usually focused on visually representing the data. It could be the classic Google Maps API, or perhaps some type of charting (Google Charts is a great resource).
Look out, CloudMade. Google announced a new feature in its Maps API that lets developers control the underlying map imagery. Map Styling gives you control of colors and whether types of features are included in the map. Previously this level of map styling was only available by paying for underlying map data, or using the Open Street Map project that CloudMade is based upon.
