Nielsen, the media-measurement juggernaut, announced that it is opening up its API for the first time. Nielsen made the announcement alongside many other groundbreaking launches and promotions as SXSW continues to heat up. With coverage in more than 100 countries, Nielsen maintains a treasure trove of data that developers have long been eager to get their hands on. With the API release, developers can begin to build applications directly off data that is generated and maintained by Nielsen.
Stitcher; the mobile leader in news, entertainment, sports, and talk radio; recently released Stitcher Connect. Stitcher Connect is "talk radio's first API developed for the car." The API delivers all of the features of Stitcher's mobile app (Stitcher Smart Radio) directly to the vehicle. According to Stitcher CEO, Noah Shanok, "Over a third of our listeners are currently using Stitcher in the car [via the mobile app]." The next logical step was to integrate directly with the automobile, so "listeners can seamlessly access and discover the best of over 10,000 shows on Stitcher in the car."
Do you live in the now or keep a foot back in the past? Better yet, what should an API provider do? At the end of July Last.fm (our Last.fm API profile) shut off some old API calls, to the disappointment of some mashup users and developers. The company had some good reasons, but it raises the question about what developers should expect, especially from free APIs.
