One of the challenges with testing applications in the cloud is that it’s difficult to replicate the production environment where those applications will ultimately run. No matter how big the cloud is, the data center where those applications are tested usually bears little resemblance to the data center where the applications will actually end up running.
The United States’ White House has developed a set of API standards they are hoping will be used across all government agencies. The standards were developed following a number of API releases, including the White House’s We The People API that allows citizen petition collection and lodgement. The new API standards document naming conventions, minimum requirements, and best practices for RESTful interfaces, while also acknowledging the importance of offering a “positive developer experience” through their API releases.
The UK’s Open Data Institute is encouraging all API developers to include a machine-readable metadata description whenever publishing an API that enables access to a dataset. The proposed publisher guide defines best practice in how to include a machine readable rights statement in API documentation, and follows recent international efforts to define API standards and best practices.
